The BART Foundation’s mission is to promote better outcomes for brain injury survivors by answering three questions: Which alternative therapies are likely to work, where can they be found, and how can they be afforded? One way we fulfill our mission is by carefully monitoring global research and clinical trial outcomes and sharing that information in user-friendly language with the TBI/ABI community.

Bart and Joel

We have recently identified four books published within the last few years that may provide insight and information into some of the alternative therapies we advocate for. We are not endorsing these titles, but rather are suggesting them for individuals or families looking to educate themselves about options available for TBI/ABI treatment. These titles are widely available through online sellers and local libraries. We are not providing a direct link to any one seller but all the information you would need to search for the book online or request it at your library.

The Healing Power of Neurofeedback: The Revolutionary LENS Technique for Restoring Optimal Brain Function, Stephen Larsen (Healing Arts Press, 2006)

This book explores a much less invasive but highly effective technique for restoring brain function: the Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS). Developed by Dr. Len Ochs in 1992, it has had extraordinary results using weak electromagnetic fields to stimulate brain-wave activity and restore brain flexibility and function. The treatment works across a broad spectrum of human activity, increasing the brain’s abilities to adapt to the imbalances caused by physical trauma or emotional disorders–both on the basic level and in the more subtle areas of cognitive, affective, and spiritual processes that make us truly human. While the treatment has had remarkable results with individuals who have experienced severe physical trauma to the head and brain, Stephen Larsen sees it also as an important alternative to chemical approaches for such chronic behavioral disorders as ADHD and monopolar and bipolar depression.

Photobiomodulation in the Brain: Low-Level Laser (Light) Therapy in Neurology and Neuroscience Michael R. Hamblin, (Academic Press, 2019)

This book presents the fundamentals of photobiomodulation and the diversity of applications in which light can be implemented in the brain. It will serve as a reference for future research in the area, providing the basic foundations readers need to understand photobiomodulation’s science-based evidence, practical applications, and related adaptations to specific therapeutic interventions. The book covers the mechanisms of action of photobiomodulation to the brain and includes chapters describing the pre-clinical studies and clinical trials that have been undertaken for diverse brain disorders, including traumatic events, degenerative diseases, and psychiatric disorders.

Solving the Brain Puzzle: A Complete Layperson’s Guide to Achieving Brain Health by Bill Code MD, Karen D. Johnson M.D., Teri Jaklin ND (Friesen Press, 2019)

You have more control over your brain health than you think! Several “jump start” techniques, including oxygen therapy, microbiota therapy (Gut Flora Transplant or GFT), photobiomodulation therapy (PMT), venous angioplasty, and even cannabis, can enhance your recovery in as little as a few weeks. Never before have we had so many safe approaches with little or no side effects. Best of all, these treatments are now available on almost every continent, including Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.

It is time we let go of our paternalistic concept that “doctor knows best.” This book describes all the above treatments and more, providing a roadmap to enhance your brain recovery. You may not feel like it right now, but you can win the brain game, and this book can show you how.

The Oxygen Cure: A Complete Guide to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Oxygen Cure

The FDA currently recognizes hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for 14 conditions, including decompression sickness, embolism, crush injury, bone infection, burns, wound healing, severe anemia, and several others. In The Oxygen Cure, hyperbaric expert William S. Max eld, M.D., will convince you that HBOT is a vastly underused modality that deserves to take its place among frontline medical treatments. As a holistic treatment, HBOT targets the underlying disease or condition, not just the symptoms. The Oxygen Cure reveals how hundreds of studies on HBOT conducted around the world prove it works at the cellular level to help or heal conditions such as TBI/ABI.
