Neurofeedback is one of the safe, alternative therapies the BART Foundation believes may help brain injury survivors. The BART Foundation aims to promote better outcomes for TBI/ABI survivors by answering three questions: Which alternative therapies are likely to work, where can they be found, and how can they be afforded? We fulfill our mission by carefully monitoring global research and clinical trial outcomes and sharing that information in user-friendly language with the TBI/ABI community.

Non-invasive brain training methods, such as EEG neurofeedback (NFB), are used to address cognitive deficits and behavioral changes in dementia and other neurological disorders by training patients to alter their brain activity via operant activity. 

We wanted to share an article published in the journal Life 202313(2), 365; in the special issue Applications of EEG in Neural Rehabilitation. Researchers from AHEPA University Hospital and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) conducted a systematic literature review of recent EEG-neurofeedback (NFB) studies in dementia, multiple sclerosis, strokes, and TBI, and the therapeutic effectiveness of EEG-NFB for both clinical use of EEG and wearable devices.

Based on the review, EEG-NFB appears to be a potential method to improve cognitive deficits in patients with neurological disorders, including TBI. However, the method’s effectiveness is often criticized because there are no specific protocols, no follow-up studies, and unclear neurofeedback targets. There is also a lack of testing of mobile approaches and of combining EEG-NFB with other methods. Still, for many families and individuals seeking TBI support, the treatment modality may have some effectiveness.
